University of Akron
Soccer Stadium Master Plan
This Master Plan will guide the future development of all future soccer facilities for the University of Akron at the main campus into the 21st Century and ensure the success of a storied NCAA Division 1 intercollegiate competition soccer program.
The project team goals were to interpret the University’s academic, athletic and social vision, develop the soccer stadium/venue that is functionally, aesthetically consistent with other university facilities, safe and comfortable for student-athlete participants, that reinforces the ties between campus and community, and lead a comprehensive and collaborative process.
The new facilities program includes the following: grandstands, locker rooms (home and visitors), concessions, public restrooms, multi-purpose suite/press box, support spaces, lighting, bermed seating, entry gates, walkways, landscaping and an Event Plaza. This plaza will service all the adjacent sports venues and become the focal point for tournament activities.
The greatest challenge for the project has been to knit the proposed soccer venue “seamlessly” into the existing context (baseball, softball and practice facilities) and to accommodate a new Campus Master Plan vision. We believe our plan has tremendous potential to satisfy both programs and be an essential “place” for student life and the community.
