OSPORTS + Osborn provided field design services for the replacement of the existing synthetic turf at the Kent State University Field House. The project consisted of the complete removal of the existing turf system and perimeter milling of existing asphalt base to accommodate the new synthetic turf system. OSPORTS + Osborn developed a synthetic turf playing surface specification to allow the replacement of the field to be competitively bid across a variety of turf suppliers and within State of Ohio public procurement regulations. The new field includes a 2” pile height, blended slit-film and monofilament fiber system with thatch layer over top of a shock attenuation pad. The blended fiber and thatch system provides maximum fiber durability and optimizes ball roll characteristics for soccer and field hockey events. A shock attenuation pad was also included underneath the new turf system to maximize energy absorption properties in head-to-surface impacts and limit head injuries for student athletes. The new field includes permanent field striping for football and color-coded “tick marks” for temporary striping of soccer, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, field hockey, and track field events.
