WSLS NBC Relocation & New Broadcast Studio

Graham Media Group | Roanoke , Virginia
In January of 2018 Graham Media Group, based in Chicago, awarded Osborn Engineering the assignment to design and relocate their digital broadcast center to a new location. Our design team, with the leadership of the Graham Corporate Team, kicked-off this project with a unique Visioning Workshop, customized to the smaller, news-focused DMA viewing audience. The results from this collaboration between corporate ownership, station management, architect and engineering disciplines and technology teaming, culminated with the relocation to an empty 28,000 SF ‘high bay’ warehouse facility. This ‘vanilla shell’ envelope provided all of the requirements for the state-of-the-art, intelligent digital center, including a revised ‘Newsroom of The Future’ swing with the latest technology. The surrounding site location worked out very well for the required satellite teleport and studio transmission link provisions as well.

As an NBC affiliate news leader in this market, with five adjacent Virginia area news bureaus, Osborn has designed the following: a unique multi-purpose news/production/morning show studio, a SMART newsroom with intelligent service panels for interactive connectivity, an aggregation center news ingest ergonomic control point which includes the expansion capabilities for digital and 5G mobile, and a technical core central rack room that will facilitate the next gen technologies with ease of integration, as they become available. Osborn has also been awarded WJXT 4/ WCWJ 17 Jacksonville, Florida transmission upgrades as part of the FCC Repack Program.
