St. John Cathedral Capital Improvements

Catholic Diocese of Cleveland | Cleveland , Ohio
Osborn Engineering provided comprehensive Lighting Design, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Technology, and Fire Protection engineering services for a series of capital improvements at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Cleveland. Originally constructed in 1852, the historic cathedral underwent significant upgrades aimed at modernizing infrastructure while preserving its architectural integrity.

A major component of the project was the extensive exterior lighting design, which was thoughtfully developed to complement the cathedral’s historic architecture, highlight key focal points, and provide energy-efficient, easily maintainable illumination. In addition, the scope of work included enhancements to the electrical power distribution, fire alarm and sound systems, as well as upgrades to the ventilation, dehumidification, and heating systems.

The lighting design included the refurbishment and rewiring of existing luminaires to accommodate more energy-efficient light sources, preserving their contribution to the cathedral’s historic character. Dimming controls were integrated to allow for adjustable lighting levels tailored to various liturgical services. Exterior lighting improvements delivered visually striking and inviting illumination that accentuated the cathedral’s façade and established it as a prominent landmark in the urban landscape.

This exceptional exterior lighting design was honored with a prestigious Illumination Award of Merit from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), recognizing excellence in the creative and technical execution of lighting design.
