Sumner Street Bridge Replacement

University of Akron | Akron, , Ohio
Osborn, in collaboration with Apexx Architecture, was selected by the University of Akron to provide professional A/E services for the replacement of the existing Sumner Street Pedestrian Bridge located on the University’s Main Campus. The design-bid-build project involved the complete replacement of the existing 3-span, 60’ x 110’ concrete slab bridge with a new single span reinforced concrete box beam bridge with a reinforced concrete composite deck. The superstructure is supported by concrete substructures founded on rock. The bridge has a clear width of 28' and an overall length of approximately 70'. The project also included replacement of the existing stairs at the west end of the bridge to facilitate pedestrian traffic between the bridge level and street level. New bridge lighting was incorporated with the proposed work and aesthetic enhancements were incorporated into the bridge elements to create a signature bridge for the University.
