Elyria City Schools & Ely Stadium

Osborn Engineering is currently providing Structural and Technology Engineering services for the design of five new schools for the Elyria City School District.

Northwood Campus is a new 150,394 SF PK-8 building that will house 1,201 students including 52 special needs students. The construction budget for this school is $27.4 million. This will be co-funded by the Ohio Facility Construction Commission and includes $1.34 million locally funded space for additional classrooms that will serve the special needs students.

The structure is two-stories with masonry load-bearing exterior walls and interior steel columns and composite steel and metal deck framing for the second floor to provide flexibility in future classroom revisions. The building includes a full gymnasium, cafeteria, and stage with long-span joists and metal deck roof structure. The design includes 10,000 SF of storm shelter space, designed per FEMA P-361 and IC 500 guidelines for tornado shelters.

Ely Elementary is a new $12.4 million building housing 493 K-4 students in 63,591 SF, which includes 4,589 SF of locally funded space for additional classrooms and itinerant space. The structure is one-story with masonry loadbearing exterior walls and interior steel columns and steel joist roof framing to provide flexibility in future classroom revisions. The design includes 4,000 SF of storm shelter space, designed per FEMA P-361 and IC 500 guidelines for tornado shelters.

Hamilton Elementary is a new 58,032 SF building. The structure is a combination of 1-story administration space with 2-story classroom space. The structure is comprised of masonry loadbearing exterior walls and interior steel columns supporting composite steel and metal deck framing for the second floor. The building includes a 2-story space for the gymnasium and cafeteria.

Eastern Heights Campus is a new PK-8 building that will house 1,284 students in 146,192 SF. The structure is a combination of a 1-story space and a 2-story classroom spaces with masonry loadbearing exterior walls and interior steel columns supporting composite steel and metal deck framing for the second floor. The building includes two gymnasium areas, cafeteria, maker space, and dedicated music rooms.

Westwood Campus is a new PK-8 94,086 SF building. The building is constructed with the main classroom wings extending radially from the main curved hallway connecting the elementary and middle school areas. The middle school classroom spaces are two stories. The structure is comprised of masonry loadbearing exterior walls and interior steel columns supporting composite steel and metal deck framing for the second floor. The building includes a 2-story space for the gymnasium and cafeteria with a 1-story mechanical room between them.

All projects involve the design of the data/voice network, wireless network, audiovisual systems, access control, video surveillance system, and intrusion detection systems under OFCC guidelines.

Osborn is working with Architectural Vision Group and the schools are being designed under the Ohio School Design Manual, to achieve LEED Silver Certification.

Ely Stadium | Osborn Engineering also provided MEP, Structural, and Technology engineering services for the Ely Stadium Project. The project consisted of a new 16,963 SF fieldhouse building which had space designated for team locker rooms, storage, indoor batting cages, and a training room; a new 1,459 SF visitor pavilion with restroom and concession services to accommodate the visitors’ side of the stadium; and a new 553 SF tennis pavilion with concession facilities to serve at the tennis court area of the school’s athletic complex.
